How ABB is tackling the energy challenge and mitigating the impact of climate change

Discover how ABB is addressing the challenges of climate change through technology innovation
The world’s population is growing faster than ever, and more and more people are living in cities. This is driving up energy consumption and emissions, and putting increasing pressure on water supplies and other natural resources. To address these challenges, society needs technologies that allow more efficient use of energy and mitigate the impact of climate change.
With more than 100,000 employees in over 100 countries, global technology leader ABB provides innovative solutions that improve energy efficiency, enable better water management, and increase quality of life in cities, for example by supporting the shift to e-mobility, which improves air quality.
“Sustainability is a key part of our company Purpose and the value we create for our customers and society as a whole,” says Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, ABB. “We make the biggest impact through our leading technologies, but we also lead by example in our own operations.”
Having more than halved its CO2 emissions since 2014, ABB is aiming to be carbon neutral in its own operations by 2030. By then, it will also have reduced its customers’ annual emissions by 100 megatons, equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million combustion cars, and significantly increased circularity across its supply chain.
As a leader in electrification and automation, ABB also helps to mitigate the impact of climate change by protecting essential infrastructure from the effects of more extreme weather. For instance, ABB technology has significantly improved water management in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, which was hit by a severe drought in 2020.
“We use digital technologies to monitor the health of essential equipment and can detect quickly, if there are abnormalities in the electrical grid or water infrastructure,” explains Amina Hamidi, Chief Technology Officer of ABB’s Electrification Business Area. “For example, by measuring the flow and level of water, we reduce water losses.”
Beyond limiting environmental impact, ABB is using its global presence to promote social progress in the communities in which it is present. As an employer and corporate citizen, ABB is focused on education, diversity and inclusion, and care in the community. In the past year, the company and its employees have significantly stepped up support for individuals and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At ABB, we believe that building a sustainable tomorrow takes all of us – the company, our employees, customers, suppliers, partners, and the communities we serve,” continues Swedjemark. “Through our leading technologies and responsible business practices, based on integrity and transparency, we are supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals and contributing to a healthier and more prosperous world.”
