Prysmian Group: Sustainable and Digitised Cables that Connect the World

One of the biggest challenges currently facing humanity is the need to transition from using fossil fuels to more renewable sources of energy. Such a transition relies upon a number of factors in order to be embraced by industries around the world, or to even be possible to begin with. Multiple industries will be affected by such a transition and will need to understand the benefits of embracing it. Additionally, the technology necessary for such a paradigm shift must be developed and made available.

Prysmian Group, headquartered in Milan, is a world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry. With almost 140 years of experience, sales exceeding €11 billion, about 29,000 employees in over 50 countries and 106 plants, the group is strongly positioned in high-tech markets and offers the widest possible range of products, services, technologies and know-how.  Prysmian Group is committed to developing its cable technology to facilitate a green energy transition, increased digitalisation and rapid decarbonisation of industries on a global scale.

The world is connected by cables; such cables are utilised to transfer energy across the world from where it is sourced to where it is required. Prysmian Group makes effective use of submarine cables to enable an effective energy transition through cost-effective interconnectedness among networks designed to promote sustainability.

Sustainability is a priority that Prysmian Group have adopted into the DNA of the company. This manifests in a number of ways; the company’s interests are aligning with those of its stakeholders in an open and transparent manner designed to clearly define the expectations of the company stakeholders insofar as sustainability is concerned. Similarly, the company utilises digital tools designed to track the carbon footprint of every cable produced, this information is made available to customers to ensure that their decisions of whether to make a purchase can be informed by facts. Prysmian Group also fosters employee ownership in order to encourage long-term engagement with the company and its values.

Digitalisation is a key focus for Prysmian Group in the pursuit of sustainability. The development of digitalisation means that less resources are required for company projects, with digitalisation allowing Prysmian Group to enrich its products and offer new features through digital means. As a result, digitalisation is a company priority, both internally and externally.

Prysmian Group’s focus lies in the development of cables; the company is currently working to make its cables smarter to ensure that further innovation is possible. The intent of such innovation is to allow more power to pass through each cable that the company operates. A great deal of power is provided by offshore wind farms and Prysmian Group’s cables often connect such power sources to where the power is consumed; innovation to increase such capacity is a priority.

Cables are necessary for the modern world to continue running. Prysmian Group ensure – with objectives based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations – that its customers are supplied with products and services that allow them to improve the financial sustainability of their own projects. The adherence to such goals puts Prysmian Group in a prime position to assist its whole sector along the same path.
