ROSSMANN: A brand that actively solves sustainability challenges

The topic of sustainability dominates nearly every area of society in today’s world. Within many industries, bringing a sustainable approach to business and taking climate action seriously is not just seen as admirable, but essential. As climate change becomes increasingly more threatening, the United Nations have made it clear that companies cannot wait to address these environmental challenges within their work, they need to act now.

ROSSMANN is a drugstore chain that understands they have a major part to play in solving sustainability challenges. Founded in 1972, the family company is known for their beauty products, household products, and other non-food products. Not a stranger to innovation, they were the first to establish the self-service concept within the drugstore industry and have been using their natural creativity and leadership to introduce sustainable initiatives. Bringing a more environmentally friendly approach to their products and activities is a priority for ROSSMANN and can be recognized throughout many areas of the company. For example, through pushing forward sustainable product design and recycling, installing photovoltaic systems at the headquarter, and making efforts to investigate the entire product lifecycle from the raw materials up to the disposal of all climate neutral ROSSMANN products. This way they can monitor the levels of CO2 emissions in production and use phases, as well as the disposal.

When it comes to organic food, offering a sustainable portfolio of organic products is extremely important to ROSSMANN. Through their enerBiO brand, they have been able to release vegan and vegetarian products at high levels of quality, collaborating with other admirable brands that care about the same issues, while simultaneously catering to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Similarly, they have shown to be a role model by pushing sustainable projects forward. For example, they searched for organic alternatives to microplastic within cosmetic products. That way ROSSMANN can offer the customers almost 1000 products that are free of microplastic. Also, they constantly work on emitting fewer propellants, for instance by creating spray cans with smaller packaging.

Otherwise, ROSSMANN has strengthened their sustainable dedication through strategic partnerships with organizations such as the Rezyclat Forum, a German company which focuses on the circular economy and the topic of correct waste separation. Other important projects in which ROSSMANN participates and which the company supports are the Gold Standard-certified climate protection project in Indonesia and a reforestation project in Hanover.

As of January 2021, the company is proud to announce that the whole ROSSMANN brand Alterra Naturkosmetik is completely climate neutral. Looking to the future, ROSSMANN is confident that through introducing new, smaller, smarter technology and products across Germany and Europe, they will be well on their way to save half a million tons of CO2 emissions each year. Ultimately, even though we are living in a time where more and more people are wanting to live according to Western living standards, ROSSMANN’s activities and products have helped businesses and consumers understand the gravity of the problem of climate change. They have contributed to inspiring others to do better and to work towards making a real difference.
